I never stopped saying that Egypt is a Mediterranean community. Attempts to impose the Arab identity and subsequently the Islamic identity yielded nothing but an obvious distortion to the Egyptian society. I am proud to be the only Egyptian who wrote and expounded more than once that the worst thing that happened to Egypt was the Arab invasion in 642 AD. Was Egypt wonderful before the emergence of political Islam? Yes, but only relatively. The only experience of modernizing Egypt, during Muhammad Ali’s EGYPT from 1805 to 1952, was always met with obstacles, resistance & opposition from various conservative parties, led by Al-Azhar, the Brotherhood, and a portion of the society, namely ultra religious Egyptian Muslims.
